“Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Banned in Bangladesh Ahead of Release”
The highly anticipated film Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut, has finally received the green light for release after a prolonged battle. However, it continues to encounter challenges in other countries. The film, which delves into the dark period of the 1970s Emergency under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is reportedly set to be banned in Bangladesh.
Sources close to the production have indicated that this decision stems from ongoing tensions between India and Bangladesh, as well as the film’s depiction of the assassination of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Shaikh Mujibur Rahman. As per the source quoted by IANS noted, “The decision to halt the screening of Emergency in Bangladesh is tied to the current strained relations between the two countries. The ban is less about the film’s content and more about the political dynamics at play.”
At the same time, the portrayal of Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, regarded as the Father of Bangladesh for his pivotal role in the country’s separation from Pakistan, has further complicated the release. The film includes scenes depicting his murder by a group of Bangladeshi extremists, which has added to the controversy.
The former PM Indira Gandhi played a crucial role in supporting Bangladesh during its war of independence against Pakistan, which ultimately led to the Indo-Pak War of 1971. Despite pressure from the U.S. government, which supported Pakistan at the time, India backed East Pakistan’s bid for independence. This intervention resulted in a significant conflict, followed by a state of Emergency declared by Gandhi, lasting from 1975 to 1977, due to perceived internal and external threats.
