A tribute to the equally hated and loved Indian democracy, Jai Ho Democracy explores the drama that enfolds in the power corridors when a border dispute is blown out of proportion by the media. A small skirmish between the Indo-Pak camps on the LoC is made out to look like a battle-in-making between the two countries, courtesy a super enthusiastic reporter, eager to earn some name and fame. The Home Minister forms a committee to decide whether India should go for the war or not.
What follows is a long-drawn meeting that sees nothing but petty ego clashes and personal rivalries between the members. The hilarious events continue and the actual purpose of the meeting is totally lost. On the one hand, everyone is waiting for the decision and on the other the meeting venue has turned into a battleground, with members, baying for each other’s blood.
The film is a political satire and takes a dig at the loopholes of the democratic system where procrastination is the order of the day. It also underlines the greed of the TRP-hungry media that sees no wrong in sensationalizing matters pertaining to national security.
With an ensemble cast of veteran actors like Annu Kapoor, Om Puri, Seema Biswas and others; Jai Ho Democracy promises to be a wholesome entertainer with an important social message doled out in a funny way. Written and directed by Ranjit Kapoor, the dialogue writer of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, it is a worthwhile watch for anyone who loves satire and politic.
