Imtiaz Ali Responds to Criticism from Vinta Nanda Over Women’s Safety Remarks at IFFI

Following criticism from veteran television producer Vinta Nanda regarding his remarks on women’s safety at the 55th IFFI International Film Festival in Goa, acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has addressed the controversy. Nanda accused Ali of being out of touch with the realities faced by women in the entertainment industry, particularly highlighting the privilege of actresses like Kareena Kapoor.
In response, Imtiaz clarified that his comments had been misunderstood. He took to his Instagram stories to express, “Uh oh, there seems to be a misunderstanding that I must clarify. I haven’t denied or disputed the numerous harassment cases that Vinta ji and many others have spoken about; these incidents are deeply disturbing and must be addressed seriously.”He elaborated on his frustration that the entire film industry, filled with well-mannered individuals, often receives a negative reputation due to the actions of a few. “Of course, terrible things have happened and continue to happen, and they are shameful.
As an industry and nation, we should adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior,” he stated.Imtiaz also recounted an experience from the set of Jab We Met, where he noted Kareena’s sense of safety while filming. He described a scene where she felt comfortable enough to remain lying down while crew members adjusted lighting above her. “I asked her if she was sure and comfortable, and she didn’t understand my concern,” he recalled, emphasizing the trust she had in the crew.
In her critique, Nanda expressed her disbelief at Ali’s comments, questioning why he was chosen to speak on behalf of women at such a significant platform. She stated, “It’s shocking to see reports of Imtiaz Ali making statements about women’s issues with zero experience. He should have abstained from speaking instead.”
