Hrithik Roshan Approaches Delhi High Court to Safeguard Personality Rights Amid Rising AI Misuse

Hrithik Roshan has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking protection for his name, image, likeness, and other aspects of his persona against unauthorized commercial use and misuse. This move follows closely on the heels of veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu’s similar legal plea, with the matter scheduled for hearing on Wednesday, according to Bar and Bench.
With the surge in generative AI and deepfake technologies, many Indian celebrities are turning to the judiciary to defend their digital and personal identities. Hrithik joins a growing list of public figures—including Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Kumar Sanu, and even the late Ratan Tata—who have sought injunctions to curb unauthorized exploitation of their name or likeness, often via AI-generated content.
Personality rights, or publicity rights, grant individuals legal control over the commercial use of their name, image, voice, and other identifiable traits. Although India lacks a specific law addressing these rights, courts have recognized and upheld them through the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution and established common law principles.
Hrithik Roshan, last seen in War 2 released on August 14, has recently gained attention not only for his acting but also as a producer. He recently launched his debut production Storm in partnership with Amazon Prime Video under his HRX Films banner. Known for his carefully chosen projects and strong public image, Hrithik’s effort to secure his personality rights highlights growing concerns among celebrities about misuse of their identity amid the rise of AI-generated videos, fake endorsements, and manipulated content.
As courts increasingly direct online platforms to remove infringing material, legal experts anticipate more celebrities will follow suit, pressing for stronger protections until India establishes a dedicated legal framework to regulate the commercial use of personal likeness in the digital age.
