Happy birthday, Tanuja: Did you know the actress was once slapped by veteran director Kidar Sharma for giggling too much?

Tanuja - Kajol or Tanisha

Veteran actress Tanuja celebrates her 77th birthday today. Yes, the gorgeous lady, who made her acting debut as a child artist, is turning a year older. However, her charm is the same as it always has been. Tanuja went on to star in several critically and commercially acclaimed films, but is best remembered as a chirpy individual who spoke her mind without any prejudices. The same trait she has passed on to her actress-daughter Kajol.

Her chirpiness though had once earned her a slap from a veteran filmmaker. Yes, you read that right. Rediff user Dinesh Raheja, in his blog, Sparkling Spitfire Tanuja, revealed an incident when the actress was slapped by her director for giggling too much. It so happened that the actress was shooting for the feature film, Hamari Yaad Aayegi in 1961. The film was directed by the late Kidar Sharma, and starred his son, Ashok Sharma. The actress was known for being a mischievous lady on the sets. And she was slapped by the veteran director for giggling while shooting a dramatic scene. However, due to that film, Tanuja was recognised as a spontaneous actress in the industry. Now, whether it was for that scene or truly out of anger, is an interesting trivia we would like to know.

Coming to her family background, Tanuja hails from a film family. Her grandmother, Ratanbai Shilotri, was an actress as well. Her mother, Shobhna Samarth, was also a well-known actress in both the Marathi and Hindi film industries. Her sister, Nutan, was the top actress of her time. In a career spanning over five decades, the actress has featured in many popular films like Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi, Jewel Theif, Anubhav, Haathi Mere Saathi, Jeene Ki Raah, Do Chor, Pyar Ki Kahani, Saathiya, Son of Sardar to name a few.
