The thriller ‘Gumraah,’ starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur, had a disastrous opening weekend. The film, which made only Rs. 1.10 crores on its first day, only made Rs. 1.20 crores on Saturday and Rs. 1.50 crores on Sunday, bringing its total first weekend collection to Rs. 3.80 crores according to sacnilk.com.

This is a shockingly low number for a film with such well-known stars and a positive response to the film’s promotional materials. However, because the first weekend is crucial for a film’s business before it battles on weekdays, there’s a good chance that Gumraah has already lost a battle because there’s no way for the film to turn a profit.

Gumraah is a remake of the 2019 Tamil film ‘Thadam,’ which starred Arun Vijay in the lead.  The film received favourable reviews from critics and was a box office success. Its Telugu remake ‘Red,’ starring Ram, was released in 2021 and also did well as well. As a result, one would have hoped that its Hindi remake would also put up decent numbers but that is not the case.

The film’s plot revolves around the investigation of a man’s murder, in which police discover two probable suspects who resemble each other but do not know each other.

Gumraah is the fourth major Hindi remake of a south Indian film this year following Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada (a remake of Telugu film ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo), Selfiee (a remake of Malayalam film ‘Driving Licence’), and Ajay Devgn’s ‘Bholaa’ (a remake of Tamil film ‘Kaithi) to sevearly underperform at the box office, in spite of having major stars.

Meanwhile, Aditya Roy Kapur will be next seen in Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino, where he will be seen with Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal and other veteran actors including Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Pankaj Tripathi.
