Girish Karnad Passes at 81

girish-karnadThe famous playwright, filmmaker and actor, Girish Karnad passed away at the age of 81 on June 10, today, Monday.

Karnad took his last breath at his residence in Bengaluru, according to his family. The film veteran was born on 19th May 1938, and is popularly known for his iconic plays like ‘Yayati’, Hayavadana’ and ‘Tughlaq’, which were written in Kannada and then later translated into English. He had also worked in a number of Kannada and Hindi films.

Following his demise, tributes from the entire Bollywood squad including veteran actors like- Kamal Hasan and several others led by India Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, himself flooded on Twitter. :

India Prime Minister, Narendra Modi tweeted: “Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him. His works will continue being popular in the years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace.”

The veteran playwright and actor, Girish Karnad was suffering from prolonged illness in Bengaluru for some time now. Known as a human being with a multifaceted personality, Karnad has also acted in several plays and movies with critical acclamation.

Girish Karnad was a recipient of Jnanpith Award, the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. He was also a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University (1960s) and also earned his Master of Arts degree in philosophy, political science and economics.
