Gehraiyaan Review: Deepika Padukone starrer is a successful balance of intimacy, shock, grief & most importantly, love

Movie: Gehraiyaan

Director: Shakun Batra

Cast: Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa, Naseeruddin Shah, Rajat Kapoor

Rating: 4/5

Story:

From the moment they meet, Alisha (Deepika Padukone), a yoga instructor, and Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi), a real estate hotshot, are instantaneously drawn to each other. The two are engulfed in a haze of pleasure until reality slaps them square in the face. As the romance progresses, the couple finds themselves on a precipice as things become more complicated. Alisha’s cousin Tia (Ananya Panday) is engaged to Zain, while Alisha is in a live-in relationship with her six-year partner Karan (Dhairya Karwa). Will their secret relationship be able to withstand the trials of life?

Direction and writing:

Shakun Batra produces multiple unpleasant situations, which can be felt in every shot. This unease is shared by Deepika as Alisha and Ananya as Tia on several occasions.

Batra’s storytelling magic is in the frames he and his writers, as well as cinematographer Kaushal Shah, create. In Gehraiyaan, he’s done a lot of that, drawing inspiration from the ocean, reflections, and the colour blue. On the surface, Tia and Zain’s lives appear to be picture perfect, but Batra unveils each character’s flaws as the story progresses.

Performances:

While the film’s first half is carried by the sea breeze, it is in the second half that life takes a nasty turn, not just romantically, but also professionally. Deepika and Siddhant carry the weight of this on their shoulders, and they do an excellent job at bringing it to life and keeping it authentic. Ananya Panday lives Tia’s rich life as if she were built for the part, yet she is weighed down by her darker feelings. Dhairya Karwa, on the other hand, makes his presence felt while sharing screen time with Deepika.

Verdict:

Gehraiyaan takes a deep look at past choices, relationships, and why we do what we do. The film has achieved a successful balance of intimacy, shock, grief, and, most importantly, love.
