The Legal Case
According to PTI, Rajpal Yadav’s legal troubles began in 2010 when he borrowed ₹5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata. Unfortunately, the film flopped at the box office, causing significant financial losses.
Over the years, accumulating interest, penalties, and delayed payments caused the dues to swell to nearly ₹9 crore. Rajpal issued multiple cheques to settle the amount, but these cheques were dishonoured, leading to criminal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

On February 2, 2026, the Delhi High Court ordered Rajpal Yadav to surrender before jail authorities by 4 pm on February 4, citing repeated breaches of undertakings and expressing displeasure at his conduct. On February 5, 2026, Rajpal appeared before the court, with his counsel stating readiness to submit a demand draft of ₹25 lakh and comply with a new payment plan.
However, the judge refused to revoke the surrender order, emphasizing the need to balance compassion with discipline and rejecting any special treatment for film industry individuals. Later that day, Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail to begin serving his six-month sentence, with jail officials confirming standard procedures were followed.
