Farida Jalal doesn’t need any introduction in B Town and people who are fond of Bollywood movies. She is among the veteran actors who is often seen supporting and comic roles working in more than 200 movies in her career span. She also appears in TV apart from the silver screen in B Town. She hails from New Delhi from a non filmy background. She did her schooling from St Joseph’s Convent in Panchgani. And at the age of 11, (1960), she won the title talent show called United Film Producers Talent Hunt Show by Filmfare. She along with Rajesh Khanna was chosen as the finalists and were given awards during the Filmfare Award Function. This gave her the break in Bollywood by getting a role in a movie called Taqdeer by Tarachand Barjatya. This gave her a couple of films, however, she got recognition with the mentally challenged would be fiancee of Rishi Kapoor’s character in Bobby.

During the eighties, she was seen in films in different roles, which included sister, girlfriend, mother, nani, aunt, etc. She is also remembered for her role in a movie called Aradhana along with Rajesh Khanna. Her role of sister in Gopi starring Dilip Kumar gave her a good boost in B Town to find similar roles in Hindi Cinema. She kept on doing similar roles and even got recognition for the same in the form of awards for films like Majboor and Paras. She worked for around 40 years in B Town movies by just taking one break during the 1983 to 1990. During the ninties, she got a number of movies, which were a big hit that include Raja Hindustani, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch sizzlinga Hai, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, etc. She was given the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for DDLJ.

Some of her recent movies include Student Of The Year and A Gran Plan, while she will be seen in one of the upcoming movies called Bezubaan Ishq along with Mugdha Godse, Sneha Ullal, and Sachin Khedekar. Apart from films, she also appeared in smaller screens, which started with Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi in 1984, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Shararat, etc. Some of her recent TV shows include Satrangi Sasural and The Great Maratha. She also co-hosted the 50th Filmfare Awards alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Bendre. As far as awards are concerned, she has won a number of them, which include Filmfare Awards for supporting actor (female) for films like Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mammo, Henna and Parast, while for A Gran Plan she won the Harlem International Film Festival Award for the Best Actress Category in 2012. She was married to Tabrez Barmavar, who was frm Bhatkal and he passed away in September 2003. She has a son named Yaseen who is all set to start his career in filmmaking.
