Farhan Akhtar-Backed Boong Triumphs at BAFTA 2026, Outshining Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2
A big news coming out there where we see Farhan Akhtar making the industry proud. Yes, you heard it right, as we see India marking a proud moment at the BAFTA 2026 awards as the Manipuri-language film Boong clinched the Best Children’s & Family Film award. Backed by Farhan Akhtar, Boong triumphed over international contenders including Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2.
This victory is celebrated as a landmark for Indian cinema, especially highlighting the rising global recognition of stories from the Northeast. The film’s success underscores the universal appeal of regional narratives rooted in local realities. Farhan Akhtar attended the ceremony alongside his wife, Shibani Dandekar.
Talking about the film, it is directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong is set in Manipur amid social and political unrest. The title means “little boy” in Manipuri. The story follows Boong, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen, a young boy convinced that reuniting his family will bring happiness to his mother, Mandakini (played by Bala Hijam). Determined to find his missing father, Boong embarks on a heartfelt journey with his best friend Raju (Angom Sanamatum).
Their quest leads them to the border town of Moreh and across into Myanmar, adding emotional and geographic depth to the narrative. Told through a child’s eyes, the film explores themes of loss, hope, and resilience in times of uncertainty.
