Fact Check: Viral Photos Claiming Gauri Khan Converted to Islam in Mecca Are Fake

A photo of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has recently surfaced on social media, showing him offering prayers at Mecca alongside his wife Gauri Khan and their elder son, Aryan Khan. In the image, Gauri is seen wearing a black kurti paired with a grey hijab, while King Khan appears somber in a white kurta. Aryan stands behind them, contributing to the family’s serene portrayal during what many claimed was their New Year celebration in Mecca. These photos seemed going viral on social media, however, on digging deep, these seemed fake.
However, the excitement surrounding the photo has been tempered by reports confirming that it is, in fact, a fake. According to NDTV, the image was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, prompting speculation about its authenticity. Alongside the viral post, some users even suggested that Gauri Khan had converted to Islam, which further fueled discussions on social media. For context, Shah Rukh Khan is a Muslim, while Gauri Khan was born into a Punjabi Hindu family.
The couple tied the knot in 1991 and has three children: Aryan, Suhana Khan, and AbRam Khan. Gauri previously addressed her religious identity in a 2005 appearance on Koffee With Karan, stating, “There is a balance. I respect Shah Rukh’s religion, but that doesn’t mean I would convert and become a Muslim.”
She emphasized the importance of mutual respect for each other’s beliefs. On the professional front, Shah Rukh Khan is set to appear in the upcoming film King, which will also feature his daughter Suhana Khan in a leading role. Details regarding the film’s plot or release date have not yet been disclosed, leaving fans eager for more information.
King Khan once talked about his children often feel confused about their religious identity. He emphasized that he frequently tells them, in true Bollywood hero fashion, that they are Indians first and foremost, and that humanity is the greatest religion of all. Shah Rukh has consistently encouraged his kids to uphold respect and faith in every religion, instilling in them the importance of embracing diversity and understanding different beliefs.
