Excitement Sets for Maa Release as it is gearing up for its Release with U/A Ratings

After a stellar week for Bollywood with the success of Sitaare Zameen Par, the industry is now eagerly anticipating another thrilling release—Maa. The film’s trailer has garnered attention, particularly due to the casting of Kajol, its horror genre, and its intriguing subject matter. Initially, there were concerns that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) might request multiple cuts and potentially assign an ‘A’ certificate to the film. However, the CBFC has pleasantly surprised everyone with its decision.

CBFC’s Approval

According to reports, the CBFC has approved Maa without requesting a single audio or visual cut. A source informed Bollywood Hungama, “With the CBFC, surprises are common. For instance, in Sitaare Zameen Par, the members demanded changes like replacing Michael Jackson with ‘lovebirds’ and altering ‘Business Woman’ to ‘Business Person’. The insistence on adding a quote from the Prime Minister stirred controversy. Given that a clean film like Sitaare Zameen Par faced such scrutiny, there were concerns about what would happen to Maa, a horror flick.”
The source added, “Despite a few disturbing scenes, the CBFC’s Examining Committee did not cut any shots. They also granted the film a U/A 16+ rating, allowing viewers under 18 to watch it.”

A Rare Achievement in Horror

This is a significant achievement, as most horror or supernatural films typically receive an ‘A’ certificate, such as Chhorii 2 (2025), 1920: Horrors Of The Heart (2023), Bhoot: Part One – The Haunted Ship (2020), and others. The only recent supernatural Hindi film not rated for adults was Shaitaan (2024), which, like Maa, was produced by Devgn Films and Jio Studios. Horror comedies, however, often receive a U/A certificate.
Returning to Maa, the CBFC only requested that the makers extend the disclaimer for readability and include details about “anti-girl child issues and human sacrifice.” Additionally, as per regulations updated in 2021, they were instructed to display the film’s title in Hindi. Once these modifications were made, the censor certificate was issued to the Maa team on June 20. The film’s runtime, as noted on the certificate, is 135.35 minutes, translating to 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 35 seconds.

Release Date

Maa is set to release in theaters on June 27.
