Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency explores pivotal moments in Indira Gandhi’s life, crafted into a compelling episodic narrative by scriptwriters Ritesh Shah and Tanvi Kesari Pasumarthy. The film avoids portraying Gandhi as a megalomaniac, instead analyzing the circumstances that shaped her character and decisions, including her relationship with her son Sanjay and controversial policies like the forced sterilization movement.
The film features infrequent satire, including remarks from US President Nixon about Indian women, and notable exchanges with former colleagues. A standout moment occurs when Gandhi meets Jayaprakash Narayan after her release from jail, highlighting the complex dynamics of her political relationships.
Emergency also touches on significant events such as the first Pokhran test in 1974 but omits her controversial role in Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death. Instead, it portrays her strong resolve regarding her Sikh bodyguards after Operation Blue Star. While certain historical facts are glossed over, the script provides a nuanced exploration of Gandhi’s psyche.

Star Performances

Kangana Ranaut delivers a powerful performance, capturing Gandhi’s vulnerability and strength, making her a strong contender for the National Award. Anupam Kher is commendable as JP, while Milind Soman and Shreyas Talpade also shine in their roles. Darshan Pandya stands out as R.K. Dhawan, Gandhi’s loyal secretary.

Direction and Music

Ranaut’s direction marks a significant improvement from her previous work, showcasing her technical prowess with meticulous framing and visual storytelling. The music by G.V. Prakash complements the film well, particularly the tracks Singhasan Khaali Karo and Aa Meri Jaan.

Final Thoughts

Emergency serves as both an educational and entertaining biopic about contemporary Indian history. Despite some omissions, it captures the essence of Gandhi’s life, making it a film worthy of multiple viewings.
