Dynamic Duet: A.R. Rahman to Compose and Co-Produce Shekhar Kapur’s Masoom: The New Generation

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and maestro composer A.R. Rahman have officially announced their latest creative alliance, Masoom: The New Generation. The contemporary project is inspired by Kapur’s landmark 1983 directorial debut Masoom, reinterpreting its deeply moving themes for a modern global audience.

This project expands a historic professional partnership between Kapur and Rahman, whose previous high-profile collaborations include Elizabeth: The Golden Age, the West End musical Bombay Dreams, and Why? The Musical. In a significant development, Rahman is stepping up to serve as both the film’s music composer and its co-producer.

Modern Realities: Love, Identity, and Migration

While the 1983 classic centered on the domestic disruption caused by an illegitimate child, Masoom: The New Generation is designed to navigate the complexities of a hyper-connected, shifting modern society. The screenplay will structurally examine contemporary themes of:

Exploring how family dynamics and emotional relationships have transformed over the decades. Intersecting the emotional core of the original story with modern global themes of love, personal identity, and migration.

Deepening a Creative Brotherhood

Reflecting on his decision to revisit his most celebrated work, director Shekhar Kapur emphasized that the core tenets of human connection require an updated cinematic lens.

Director Shekhar Kapur: “For a long time, I’ve felt that the themes of Masoom deserved to be revisited through the lens of today’s world. Families, relationships, identity; these ideas have evolved so much, and cinema must evolve with them. Rahman has always had the rare ability to create music that speaks directly to the soul of a story and its audience. Having him as both composer and creative partner on this journey makes it even more meaningful.”

A.R. Rahman expressed similar artistic urgency, noting that his multi-faceted role as a co-producer was driven by the sheer strength of the new script’s vision.

Composer & Co-Producer A.R. Rahman: “Working with Shekhar has always been a deeply enriching experience; he has been a mentor and a creative force in many ways. When he shared the vision for this film, I felt compelled to be involved beyond the music. There’s something timeless about Masoom, and reinterpreting that emotional world for a new generation feels both exciting and necessary.”
