Digital Platforms to Have Censor for Content Regulation in India
We have now entered into the digital entertainment era where digital platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime have become the part and parcel of our day to day life. Many of the web series and web based films released on these online platforms are free from censor board that comes along without any regulation in terms of adult scenes and cuss words. Thus the use of losing language and erotic sequences in these shows have become the key feature of digital entertainment.
But to keep a check on these things, a PIL was filed by an NGO called Maatr Foundation in Indore Bench of the High Court of MP demanding to have a censor board for these platforms. The PIL has demanded the court to have a censor board for the digital content released in India on the online platforms like Balaji Telefilms, Ullu, Viacom 18, VIU, Yash Raj Films, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and more. The PIL said that obscene and vulgar content can be easily accessed on phone using the internet on these apps with the released web series and shows.
The PIL also equated the content released on the digital media somewhere close to porn, which remains banned in India since 2015. It also said that the online contents are showing women in a bad shape and thus adding filth in the minds and hearts of young adults. Having a regulatory body like Central Board of Film Certification for Hindi cinema the streaming services can be easily monitored, which is important for shaping up the young minds and hearts that are affected by the unregulated digital content.
