The Kerala Story Box Office Collection Day 1: Adah Sharma’s controversial film opens to decent numbers

The Kerala Story, starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani has been the talk of the town ever since its trailer was released online. Despite multiple controversies and average reviews by critics the film opened to decent numbers on its opening day on May 5. As per a trade analyst Taran Adarsh the film earned Rs 8.03 crore nett on its opening day.

This  is the fifth-highest opening for a Hindi film in 2023 after Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (55 crore), Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (15.81 crore), Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s romantic comedy Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Rs 15.7 crore), and Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa (Rs 11.20 crore).

‘The Kerala Story’ has divided the internet, with some netizens applauding the film and claiming it is based on fact, while others call it a vulgar propaganda film against other religions, which is contrary to Hindu beliefs.

‘The Kerala Story’ has been accused of “falsely claiming” that 32,000 women became radicalized and joined the terrorist organisation ISIS. A slew of petitions were submitted, all of which were denied, and the film was finally released in theatres on May 5. However, the trailer’s description was recently modified from “the story of 32,000 women” to “the story of three women”, and makers also agreed to remove the film’s teaser from all social media accounts.

‘Sudipto Sen wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the banner of ‘Sunshine Pictures’. ‘The Kerala Story’ has an estimated budget of Rs 40 crores, which means it will break even within the first weekend.
