CBFC Cuts Kissing Scene by 5 Seconds and Alters Dialogue in Thamma Ahead of Diwali Release

With just three days left for the grand Diwali release of Thamma, excitement is building steadily. Maddock Films, the producers, completed the censor certification process on time, and Bollywood Hungama brings you an exclusive look at the cuts mandated by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for this horror comedy.
The CBFC requested three audio edits and one visual modification. The name ‘Alexander’ was replaced with ‘Sikandar,’ and the word ‘Ashwathama’ was muted in another dialogue. Notably, in the second half, the phrase ‘Azaadi doonga’ was changed to ‘Aiyaashi karata hoon’. The Examining Committee also asked the filmmakers to minimize the slurping sound during a blood-drinking scene. Most significantly, a kissing scene in the latter half of the film was trimmed by 30%, reducing it by 5 seconds. While this cut might disappoint some viewers, it is relatively minor compared to recent CBFC intimacy edits.
For instance, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari saw its lip-lock scenes reduced by 60%, Saiyaara had 10 seconds of sensual visuals deleted, and Superman faced a 33-second cut of intimate scenes, which sparked considerable criticism. After these modifications, Thamma received its censor certificate on October 15 with a U/A 16+ rating. The film’s final runtime is 149 minutes and 59 seconds (2 hours, 29 minutes, and 59 seconds).
Thamma is set to release on Tuesday, October 21, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Paresh Rawal. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar of Munjya (2024) fame, the film is part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, sharing its world with hits like Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya.
This measured approach to censor cuts reflects a balance between creative expression and regulatory guidelines, allowing Thamma to retain its essence while complying with CBFC norms.
