Wiki : Asin Thottumkal is popular South Indian and Bollywood film actress who is fondly known as Asin. She was born in Kochi (Cochin) in a Catholic family carrying a number of businesses for their decent living. Her mother is a surgeon and lives with her and other daughters in Mumbai. She did her schooling from Naval Public School in Kochi and then went to St Teresa’s School and College for her junior college. She continued her graduation in the same institute doing her BA in English Literature getting a degree from MG University. Currently she is based in Lokhandwala in Mumbai and has her own apartment in Marine Drive Kochi apart from one farmhouse in Vagamon Kerala. She is fluent in seven languages, which include Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, English, Sanskrit and French. She also knows Marathi and Italian to certain extent.
She started her career working as model wherein she appeared in BPL Mobile ad. Soon, she got her first break in acting with a Malayalam movie called Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in the year 2001 when she was barely 15 years of age. She took break for one year for her education after doing her first film and returned to do another called Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, which was her first Telugu movie. This gave her first Telugi Filmfare Award under the category of Best Actress. Since then it was no looking back for her. Some of her south Indian Films include M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (Tamil), Ullam Ketkumae (Tamil), Ghajini (Tamil), Maaja (Tamil), Aalwar (Tamil), etc. while Telugu movies include Lakshmi Narasimha, Gharshana, Chakram and Annavaram.
Asin Thottumkal’s journey in Bollywood started with the Aamir Khan Starrer film Gajani, which gave her Filmfare award in debut category for her character of Kalpana Shetty. This followed a number of them, which include London Dreams, Ready, Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan, and Khiladi 786. Currently she is doing her film called All Is Well, which is directed by Umesh Shukla, while produced by T Series owner Bhushan Kumar. Apart from films, she has been the brand ambassador for a number of products and companies, which include Colgate, Mirinda, Avon, Tanisq, Fairever, Spinz, Big Bazaar, Lux, All Clear Clinic, etc. Besides, she has also been appeared over the cover of a number of magazines, which include Femina, Cine Blitz, Filmfare, Vogue India, Wedding Affair (Asian Edition), The Hindu Bridal Mantra, SouthSide, Tulip, etc.
She has been also the judge of Femina Miss India in 2009 and 2013. Also, she was seen in the Daboo Ratnani calendars who happen to be country’s known fashion photographer for the year 2010 to 2013. Apart from this, she is active in a number of humanitarian causes, which include helping the Sri Lankan Tamil people of Sri Lankan Civil War during the shooting of film called Ready. She was also seen in DNA I Can Women’s Half Marathon in 2012 wherein she spoke about the importance of health and education. She is involved in a number of women and child development programs meant for their welfare. As far as the awards are concerned, she is won several Filmfare awards for South Indian movies like Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi and Ghajni (Tamil), while in Bollywood, the Aamir Khan starrer Ghajni, which was her debut film gave her the newcomer award. She won the title – GR8! Women Achiever Award in Cinema not just once but twice in 2009 and 2013.
