Bollywood’s Diwali Releases Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat Brace for Tough Competition from Regional Films; Exhibitors Prepare for Screen Sharing Challenges

With just a week left until the Diwali release of the horror-comedy Thamma and the intense romantic drama Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, the festive season promises stiff competition at the box office. Traditionally, regional films avoid releasing during Diwali, but this year marks a departure from that trend, as Marathi, Gujarati, and Punjabi movies are set to clash with the big Hindi releases.
Marathi Cinema Enters the Fray

PVR Inox Pictures will handle its distribution.
Another Marathi film, Punha Shivajiraje Bhosale directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, was initially slated for a Diwali release but has now been postponed to October 31.

Gujarati Cinema’s Bold Entry
The Gujarati film Chaniya Toli, produced by Anand Pandit Motion Pictures, stars Yash Soni, Ragi Jani, Nikita Sharma, and others, with a special appearance by Janki Bodiwala of Shaitaan (2024). The movie, which centers on a group of village women robbing a bank and the ensuing chaos, has been dubbed the ‘Gujarati Money Heist.’ Its trailer has generated strong buzz, with exhibitors in Gujarat anticipating a surprising box office performance.
Punjabi Film Festival Release
The Punjabi sequel Godday Godday Chaa 2, backed by Zee Studios, will also debut on Diwali. Featuring Ammy Virk, Tania, Gurjazz, Gitaj Bindrakhia, and Nikeet Dhillon, the film continues the story from Godday Godday Chaa (2023). Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, who also helmed Son Of Sardaar 2, this film adds to the competitive lineup.

Exhibitors Brace for a Fierce Battle Over Screens
Trade insiders predict an intense fight for screen time this Diwali. A trade expert noted, “Screen clashes are common when two major Hindi films release simultaneously, as we recently saw with Kantara and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. This festive season, the tussle between Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat for prime slots will be complicated further by strong regional contenders. Marathi, Gujarati, and Punjabi films backed by prominent producers and loyal audiences will heighten the competition, forcing exhibitors to carefully balance show allocations.”
