On 28th June 2019, Marvel re-released Avengers: Endgame with auxiliary footage just to get the title of highest-grossing film EVER. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, it seems to have done the job just right because Endgame is set to uncrown James Cameron‘s Avatar as the all-time highest-grossing film around the world at box office.

Marvel’s already has glory time at Comic-Con in San Diego, so this is just the cherry on cake.

Avatar has held the throne for a decade with an all-over total gross of USD$2.79 billion and for a minute it seemed like, it would hang on for more than a decade. But then, Marvel re-released Endgame with six minutes of auxiliary footage. As of Friday (19TH July, 2019) Endgame is only USD$500,000 behind Avatar and the experts secretly believe that the gap will be soon closed once all the weekend box office grosses are calculated. On Sunday, Disney declared that the earned $2.79 billion at the global box office, topping “Avatar’s” record of $2.7897 billion.

“Endgame” has been in theaters for just 87 days. “Avatar,” for comparison, ran for 234 days during its first run, and was then rereleased in 2010.

Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn congratulated the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios team thanked the fans around the world “who helped lift the Avengers: Endgame to these significant heights.”

He added “Of course, even with the passage of a decade , the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar will remain as powerful as ever, and the thunderstruck achievements of both of these films are real life ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience.”

Well it should be noted that with the acquisition of Fox earlier this year, Disney now owns “Avatar” and its upcoming slate of four sequels.
