Bio – Ashutosh Gowariker is a popular Indian movie director, writer, producer and actor. Some of his hit movies include Swades, Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar, etc. His movie Lagaan was even nominated in Oscars, which finally lost to No Man’s Land and bagged the national film award while five Filmfare awards and seven different international film festival awards. Talking about his early life, his origin comes from Brahmin family from Kolhapur with no film background. His uncle Dr. Vasantrao Gowariker is among the noted scientists of India, while his cousin Avinash Gowariker is among the noted magazine and film photographer. He did his graduation in Chemistry from Mitibai College, Bombay wherein he was seen active in acting, dance and music performance.
His started his career with the film Holi of Ketan Mehta in the year 1984 and during its set, he met Aamir Khan. He then did a couple of TV serials, which included CID, Circus along with several movies including Naam, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Chamatkar, etc. However, his first directorial movie was Pehla Nahsa, which was big flop. Later, he did Baazi in the year 1995 starring Aamir Khan that brought an average collection over the Box office. In the year 2001, Gowariker directed the famous epic film called Lagaan, which gave him and the film critical acclaim both in India and abroad. It gave a couple of awards in Filmfare, while a number of international awards in the foreign Language film category.
In the year 2004, he directed the popular movie Swades, which gave him and the film critical acclaim. It was extremely popular in India and abroad. Gowariker is commonly known as actor’s director, and gave Bollywood some of the best films, which brought critical claims both India and abroad. Another worthy historical acclaimed movie was Jodhaa Akbar, which was based on the sets of 16th century, beautifully showcased by Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. This movie got a good review both Indian and abroad. Gowariker is known for his own civility via his movies. In fact, this very movie bagged all the bigger awards including even the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards in Macau (China). It gave awards including the best movie, best actor, best director, etc.
One of his latest movie include Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey regarding the Chittagong Uprising set based over the undivided Bengal in the year 1930 that is based on Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan, which was released in the year 2010, however, it was a big flop yet was able to receive certain positive reviews. Nowadays, he is currently working in the upcoming movie based on the life of Buddha.
