Dharmendra, Bollywood’s Beloved He-Man, Passes Away at 89

Veteran actor Dharmendra, fondly known as Bollywood’s He-Man, passed away at the age of 89 on Monday, November 24, at his residence in Mumbai, according to news agency IANS. Earlier this month, he had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital due to respiratory complications but was discharged after treatment. His death comes just days before his 90th birthday on December 8, 2025.
Dharmendra leaves behind an extraordinary legacy spanning over six decades, having been one of Indian cinema’s most iconic stars. His final film appearance will be in Ikkis, scheduled for release on December 25.He is survived by his wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and six children—actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, along with Ajeeta and Vijeta.
Starting his career with the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, Dharmendra showcased his versatility in both intense and comic roles. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, in 2012. Over his illustrious career, he starred in numerous classics such as Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Pratiggya, Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, Satyakam, Ankhen, Dharam Veer, Loha, Hukumat, and Apne, among many others.
His production Ghayal, featuring his son Sunny Deol, won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Dharmendra himself earned multiple Filmfare Best Actor awards for films like Phool Aur Patthar, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Yaadon Ki Baarat, and Resham Ki Dori.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8 in a village near Ludhiana, Punjab, he married Prakash Kaur in 1954 before entering films and later married actress Hema Malini.Even in his late 80s, Dharmendra remained active on social media, often sharing videos promoting healthy living and organic farming.
Many posts showed him driving tractors, tending to his farm, and offering simple life lessons and farming tips. His last on-screen appearance was in the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.Dharmendra’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever.
