Ameesha Patel Surrenders in Fraud Case Prior to the Release of ‘Gadar 2’
Bollywood actress Ameesha Patel surrendered before the Ranchi Civil Court on Saturday in relation to a cheque bounce case. Senior division judge DN Shukla granted her bail and instructed her to appear before the court again on June 21.
The case dates back to 2018 when Jharkhand-based film producer Ajay Kumar Singh filed a complaint of fraud and cheque bounce against the actress.
“The court had previously issued multiple summons to her in the case, but she failed to appear. Subsequently, a warrant was issued against her,” stated the complainant’s advocate Vijaya Lakshmi Srivastava.
According to the complaint, Singh had transferred ₹2.5 crore to Ameesha Patel’s bank account for the production of a movie titled “Desi Magic”. However, Patel did not proceed with the film and later sent a cheque of ₹2.50 crore, which bounced.
This surrender comes at a time when Patel is gearing up for her silver-screen comeback with ‘Gadar 2’, in which she stars alongside Sunny Deol.
In August 2022, the Supreme Court stayed the criminal proceedings related to the charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust against Patel, concerning the summons issued by the trial court in Jharkhand.
However, the top court clarified that proceedings for offences punishable under Section 138 (cheque bounce) of the Negotiable Instruments Act can continue as per the law.
The Supreme Court’s decision came in response to an appeal filed by Patel against the May 5, 2022 order of the Jharkhand High Court, which dismissed her plea to quash and set aside the trial court’s order in Ranchi regarding the complaint against her.
In addition to the ongoing legal proceedings, Ameesha Patel’s surrender before the Ranchi Civil Court has brought attention to her upcoming film, ‘Gadar 2’, where she is set to make a comeback alongside Sunny Deol. The actress has been navigating the legal challenges while preparing for her highly anticipated return to the silver screen.
