Amazon Prime Video Acquires Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 for a Staggering Rs. 110 Crores, Surpassing Netflix’s Rs. 100 Crores Offer

Following its successful theatrical run, Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 is set to premiere on OTT on October 31. Amazon Prime Video has secured the streaming rights for the original Kannada version along with dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. The Hindi dubbed version will be released digitally a month later. Bollywood Hungama has learned about the competitive bidding behind this digital deal.
A source revealed, “The makers initially sought Rs. 125 crores for the OTT rights, given the film’s immense buzz. Netflix offered Rs. 100 crores, but Amazon Prime Video outbid them with an offer of Rs. 110 crores, which sealed the deal.”
This deal marks the second-highest OTT acquisition for a Kannada film, with KGF – Chapter 2 (2022) holding the record for digital rights valued at over Rs. 300 crores. Notably, both KGF and Kantara franchises are produced by Hombale Films, a banner credited with elevating Kannada cinema to global prominence through these landmark successes.
Kantara stars Rishab Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, Kishore, and Achyuth Kumar. The film narrates the story of a carefree youth in a Karnataka forest who rises to heroism when a seemingly friendly landlord attempts to seize villagers’ land by deceit. The villagers’ devotion to Panjurli, a demigod protector of their forest community, plays a pivotal role in the narrative.
Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 features Rishab Shetty alongside Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram. This sequel explores the origins of the mythological traditions and ancestral conflicts introduced in the first film. Both movies are directed by Rishab Shetty, with Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 concluding on a note teasing an upcoming sequel, Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 2.
