Aamir Khan Confirms ‘3 Idiots’ Sequel; Film to Jump 10 Years Ahead

In a development that has sent waves of excitement through Indian cinema fans, Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel to the 2009 landmark hit 3 Idiots is currently in development. Speaking during a recent interaction while promoting his upcoming production Ek Din, Aamir shared that the creative team behind the original—director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi—are actively working on the script.

The actor, currently busy with the Hindi debut of Sai Pallavi and his son Junaid Khan in Ek Din (releasing May 1, 2026), revealed that the project recently took precedence over a previously planned biopic.

The Shift from Dadasaheb Phalke to ‘3 Idiots 2’

Aamir clarified that while a biopic on the “Father of Indian Cinema,” Dadasaheb Phalke, was in the works, it has been temporarily shelved. Despite three drafts, Rajkumar Hirani remained dissatisfied with the script, feeling it didn’t yet meet the emotional and humorous benchmark of their previous collaborations. “At this moment, I think he is working on 3 Idiots 2,” Aamir shared. “I have heard the story, and it has turned out very well.”

A New Chapter: 10 Years Later

While the sequel is still being refined, Aamir provided a few tantalizing details about the narrative direction: The story will pick up with the beloved original characters 10 years after the events of the first film. Aamir promised that the script retains the “same kind of humor” while offering an “unusual story” that explores a new phase of life for the trio. The actor expressed his personal eagerness to step back into the shoes of the eccentric genius, stating, “It’s a beautiful story… I am also waiting to do that.”

Impact and Legacy

Released nearly 17 years ago, 3 Idiots was a cultural phenomenon that redefined box office benchmarks and sparked national conversations about the Indian education system. With the original cast including R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi—previously hinting at their interest in a reunion, this official confirmation from Aamir Khan marks the most concrete progress for the sequel to date.

As Aamir concludes his promotional tour for Ek Din, the industry is now looking toward late 2026 for more formal announcements regarding the production timeline of this highly anticipated return to the world of “All is Well.”
