In February 2024, it was announced that Drishyam the iconic Indian thriller—is set to have remakes in multiple foreign languages. This significant development was confirmed by Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, who obtained the international remake rights for Drishyam 1 and Drishyam 2 from the original producers, Aashirvad Cinemas.
It was revealed at the time that remakes for the USA and Korea were already in progress, while discussions for the Spanish adaptation were being finalized. Nearly two years later, it has now been confirmed that the Spanish remake of Drishyam will begin production in just a few months.
According to a report in Bombay Times, Rodrigo Espinel, producer of Drishyam’s Spanish adaptation, announced at the International Film Festival of Delhi that filming is slated to start in June. Espinel shared, “It’s an interesting story because my partner, who is a Mexican producer, bought the IP rights and contacted us.
Spain offers remarkable tax incentives, and the story is a perfect fit for Spanish culture. We’ve begun pre-production, and shooting will commence next June with a Spanish director and a top-tier Spanish cast.”
When asked about the Spanish audience’s potential connection to Drishyam’s story, Rodrigo Espinel explained, “At its core, it’s a universal story about a father protecting his daughter and a mother searching for her son. These themes are relatable and easy to adapt. As a producer, adapting a very local movie can be challenging because the soul of the film might get lost. But in this case, even though it’s a very Indian movie, its emotional essence translates seamlessly.”
The Malayalam Drishyam franchise, led by Mohanlal, has also seen immense success. Drishyam 2 debuted in 2021 to rave reviews, and the third installment is set to hit theaters on May 21, 2026. With the Spanish remake gearing up for production and the original franchise continuing to thrive, Drishyam’s legacy as a global phenomenon only seems to grow stronger.
