Mili Review: Janhvi Kapoor’s outstanding performance is pulled down by lazy writing

Movie: Mili
Director: Mathukutty Xavier
Cast: Janhvi Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Sunny Kaushal
Runtime: 2h 10m
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

Story:

Janhvi Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal, and Manoj Pahwa starrer Mili are now in theatres. Directed by Mathukutty Xavier and produced by Boney Kapoor, the film is a survival thriller with a very simple plot. Mili a 24 year old girl who aspired to fly to Canada to build a better life, has a lot on her plate, including her boyfriend from another caste and her fast-paced world. She is locked inside the cold storage of a food joint one fine day when things are already bad, and she now has to thrive to survive and come out alive.

Review:

Despite the film’s simple plot, there are numerous flaws in its writing. To begin, when Mili is trapped in a freezer, her phone begins to ring. Her father (Manoj Pahwa) continues to call her, but when she doesn’t answer, he files a missing person report. However, nobody had ever considered tracking her phone for the longest time. Mili’s boyfriend aka Sameer (played by Sunny Kaushal) only suggests tracking Mili’s phone near the end of the film.

The film’s plot appears to be a little stretched. Anyone who has seen the trailer will go to the theatre to watch Mili get stuck in a freezer and the events that ensue. However, considerable time has been devoted to presenting the father-daughter bond. Even though it is beautifully done, it takes you away from the actual plot, leaving you wondering when the thriller will begin!

Performances:

The film’s cast has also been wasted. Janhvi Kapoor is competent in her field but falls short of the mark. Even when she is trapped in a freezer and fighting for her life, there is no scene that leaves you speechless or gives you goosebumps. Manoj Pahwa is exactly who he is in every other film or television show. Sunny Kaushal should have received more screen time as well. It should be noted, however, that the fault does not lie with the actors, but with the script. It does not allow for any experimentation by the actors.

Music:

The music is also inappropriate for the film’s theme. When Mili is locked inside a freezer, for example, the music does not make you feel sorry for her. It sounds more cheerful.

Mili Verdict:

Lastly, Mili could have been a much better film if the writers had worked harder on the script. You can still plan to go to theaters to watch it but don’t over-expect from the film.
