Bairavaa Tamil Movie Review

Bairavaa Tamil movie review

This week is indeed a busy one with too many south Indian movies releasing along with the Bollywood ones. These certainly include Bairavaa, which is a Tamil-language action film. The film is written and directed by Bharathan while it is produced by B. Bharathi Reddy under the banner of Vijaya Productions. The film has Vijay and Keerthy Suresh in the pivotal roles, while it also has Sathish, Jagapathi Babu, Daniel Balaji, Mime Gopi, Sreeman and Sija Rose playing the supporting roles. The music of the film is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, while the cinematography is managed by M. Sukumar and the film is edited by Praveen K. L. After entering into the phase of production in early 2016, the film though was seen under the tentative title of Vijay 60 but later it was named as Bairavaa during September 2016. The film had a worldwide release on 12 January 2017.

Plot

Bairavaa played by Vijay is yet another typical gareebon ka superhero who is seen working as a recovery agent for a bank. He is known for his own tactics to make huge defaulters return loan amounts. Unlike any of his previous characters, he is an indestructible man who is seen taking any number of goons at the blink of an eye. Out of blue, he meets and falls in love with Malarvili played by Keerthy Suresh) who happens to be a medical student from Tirunelveli. The two meets at his boss’s daughter’s wedding. However, she has some issues with a dreaded businessman PK played by Jagapathi Babu, the owner of the medical college wherein she is studying in. His nefarious activities lead to the deaths of her best friend and her father. Now Bairavaa takes it upon himself to save Malarvili and her family from the bloody hands of PK and his dreaded lieutenant Daniel Balaji. So, what happens next is interesting to explore.

Review

If you happen to be a hardcore Vijay fan, the film Bairavaa might appeal you to a certain extent. Vijay is simply at his crowd-pleasing best and is simply the best in things like romancing a girl, dance like a dream, pout one-liners while kicking ass. Some of the masala and humor elements will certainly going to entertain you. The set-up of the Tamil film is like that of Ghilli, another film which had Bharathan and Vijay working together. Once again, we get to see a happy-go-lucky young man, and a lady in distress and an influential man who is keen to keep her alive while tearing apart her world. The only difference if you could call it that is that the hero goes to the villain’s home ground and takes him on there, while it was the other way around in Ghilli. As for the second half, Bharathan takes inspiration from the films of Dharani and Hari and structures it as a cat-and-mouse game between the hero and the villain. But the tone is very much dull for a typical masala film, with very little of the fun that we associate with films in this genre. Even the songs lack the verve and jauntiness that such films need.

Yet one can find some of the elements that work unlike the robust action blocks, which keep reminding us of how the film could have been so much more than what it is now, the references to Vijay and the star himself. By now, the actor can be seen playing these roles in his sleep and he tries his best to keep things entertaining. He even makes us take a poorly written and staged courtroom scene with all seriousness. But when the script and the director are of no help, there is only so much that a star can do. The camerawork is fine, while the background score suits the tone of the movie. It’s also laudable that the director tries to address the malpractices in private medical colleges, but the treatment given to subject sucks big time.

Bairavaa The Last Word

The film Bairavaa is nothing but a shameless hero-worshipping venture, which is tailored to appease only his diehard fans. As a film, it is a great disappointment for being shockingly indifferent, and being a cruel bore at that. Bairavaa is the kind of movie Tamil cinema should discard like old 1000 rupee notes as soon as possible. This has therefore hampered the rating of the movie in a big way giving away a meager rating at the end of the day.

Rating -1.5
