Annu Kapoor was born as Anil Kapoor who chose Annu as his screen name. He was born in the year 1956 and is a known presenter, anchor, actor, director and producer. He was born in Bhopal in a mixed family of Punjabi and Bengali parent. His father owned a travelling Parsi theatre company, which was known to perform in a number of towns and cities, while his mother was a known poetess and trained classical singer. His grandfather was a doctor in British army, while his great grandfather was a revolutionary who was even executed by the British for his struggle for independence. He had to lose his education owing to the bad financial conditions and later he joined his father’s theatre group, while his other worked as a teacher. In 1976, he joined NSD on the insistence of his elder brother.

After completing his studies in NSD, he was offered a role of a 70 year old man in a movie Ek Ruka Hua Faisala in Bombay. His performance was appreciated, which prompted Shyam Benegal to give him an offer for his next movie called Mandi in 1983. His first movie was directed by his own brother, hence in Indian cinema he did his debut with Mandi. Since then he did a number of movies, which include Betab, Mashall, Mr. India, Tezaab, Chameli Ki Shadi, Ram Lakhan, etc. while his recent movies include films like Shaukeens, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Badlapur Boys, Vicky Donor, etc.

Apart from working over the silver screens, he is also acted in smaller screens. He was seen in a number of TV shows, reality programs and serials. These include Khari Khari, Meri Awaz Suno, Golden Era, Antakshari, Sardar in Kaala Pani, etc. He is also seen trying his luck over the radio show called 92. Big FM known as Suhaana Safar with Annu Kapoor wherein he is known to cover all the nation.                Here he is seen recreating the magic of the Golden era with some unforgettable melodies of that particular era and discusses the untold stories about the films and stars of the Hindi movies with the tagline called Filmy Duniya Ki Kahi Ankahi Kahaniya. He will be seen with Naseeruddin Shah and Paresh Rawal in a movie Dharam Khatre Mein.

He also worked as a director wherein he directed a number of plays, which include the feature film Abhay for Children’s Film Society, India, which even bagged the National Award under the children category films. He is also a producer, who produced a couple of shows including the musical talent contest for kids called Aap Jhoomein Gaayen telecasted over Sab TV, while even seen in regional shows in Kolkata. As far as his achievements are concerned, he won Best Director getting the Shantaram Award for the film Abhay and as said above, he bagged the Best Director for National Film Award for Best Children’s Film Abhay (The Fearless) in recent times, he was awarded with Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Vicky Donor and even a national award for the same category.
