Akshay’s Cuttputlli, a serial killer movie, has been released today, bringing addition to the crime thriller dramas. Several serial killers, including Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy, Charles Sobhraj, and others, have piqued the interest of filmmakers and writers over the years in making crime thriller movies.

Cuttputlli, an adaptation of a Tamil movie, is now available on Disney+ Hotstar. It features Akshay Kumar and portrays the narrative of a serial killer who targets and mercilessly kills young schoolgirls.

Besides Cuttputlli, do you know these five crime thrillers that have stayed in people’s memories and have haunted them for a while?

Kaun (1999)
This 1999 film is a psychological thriller starring Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpayee. The plot revolves around a serial killer who is mentally disturbed. He entices people and brings them to his house to murder them. Anurag Kashyap is popular for his fast-flash writing and handwritten screenplays. He wrote the film overnight and shot it in just 15 days.

This is Ram Gopal Varma’s sixth Hindi film and reunites the powerful crew of ‘Satya,’ with Urmila, Manoj, and Sushant Singh leading the cast.

Murder 2 (2004)
The sequel to the 2004 big blockbuster ‘Murder,’ follows a serial killer who attacks teen sex workers. Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandez play the protagonists, while Prashant Narayanan plays the antagonist. In the film, he has a history of torturing and murdering women.

Ek Villain (2014)
Shraddha Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, and Riteish Deshmukh are featured in this 2014 major hit. Riteish plays the serial killer Rakesh Mahadkar. He brutally murders women who speak harshly to him. The plot revolves around Sidharth Malhotra’s character’s revenge after his wife, Ayesha, represented by Shraddha Kapoor, is murdered by Ritesh’s character.

The Stoneman Murder (2009)
The 2009 neo-noir crime thriller ‘The Stoneman Murders,’ starring Kay Kay Menon and Arbaaz Khan, is next on the list. It is based on the true story of the Stoneman serial killings that shook Mumbai (Bombay in the 1980s).

The anonymous attacker located his victims among Mumbai’s footpath inhabitants. They were murdered with stones in their sleep. The film combines fiction and reality. It is Manish Gupta’s debut feature-length film. He later directed ‘Rahasya,’ a movie that focuses on the tragedy of Arushi Talvar.

Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)
The last film on the list is from Dobaaraa director Anurag Kashyap. It stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal, showcasing the narrative of a serial killer portrayed by Nawaz and a cop played by Vicky. Despite being on opposite ends of the social pyramid, the two have a lot in common.

It was screened in the Directors’ Fortnight category of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and is based on the true story of Mumbai serial murderer Raman Raghav, who terrorized people in the 1960s.
