EXCLUSIVE: Here’s remembering the legends we lost this year!

We are just two months into 2022, yet we have already lost several well-known figures. Pandit Birju Maharaj, a Kathak great, died in January of this year, while famed singer Lata Mangeshkar died in February, and Bappi Lahiri followed in March, all leaving behind an irreplaceable emptiness. Here are some icons to remember:

Lata Mangeshkar:

Legend Lata Mangeshkar, the Queen of Music, died on February 6th, leaving the country in mourning. After being hospitalized for about a month, the 92-year-old singer died of multi-organ failure. Lata Mangeshkar, often known as Didi, has written almost 25000 songs. Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honor, was given on Lata Mangeshkar in 1969, followed by Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award, in 1999, and the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, in 2000.

Bappi Lahiri:

Legend Bappi Lahiri, also known as the Bollywood Disco King, passed away on February 16. Obstructive sleep apnea claimed the life of the 69-year-old singer-composer (OSA). Bappi Lahiri’s legacy includes songs such as “Chalte Chalte,” “Tamma Tamma Loge,” and “Yaad Aa Raha Hai Tera Pyar,” to mention a few. He was also noted for his distinct style, which was dominated by gold chains and jewelry.

Pandit Birju Maharaj:

Pandit Birju Maharaj, a Kathak icon, died on January 17 in Delhi. The 83-year-old superstar passed away after suffering a heart attack. The renowned Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, was bestowed upon the doyen. Pandit Birju Maharaj choreographed Madhuri Dixit in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (1997) and ‘Devdas’, Deepika Padukone in ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015), and Alia Bhatt in ‘Kalank’ during his storied career as a Kathak legend (2019). Pandit Ji received a National Film Award for Best Choreography for Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vishwaroopam’ in 2012.

We are glad to have been blessed with the talents of these legends. For more such updates, stay tuned to Cine Talkers.
