Banned film “Unfreedom” completes 50 grassroots private screenings in India.
UNFREEDOM, which was denied Censor Certificate with its present content in film-maker’s native India successfully screens at 50 different venues across various Indian cities.
Mumbai (December 30, 2015) – The team of Unfreedom Movie has been successful in taking the film to the audience through an alternative route, when the authorities restricted the audience from watching the film traditionally. The film recently completed its 50th screening event in the city of Trivandrum.
There have been private screening across India. Cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Goa, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Trivandrum, Pondicherry, Jamshedpur etc. have hosted and appreciated the film, proving that there is an audience out there for such niche motion pictures.
Unfreedom, that was banned in India, released in The USA on May 29th, 2015 but the Director’s dissension from FCAT’s verdict (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) to ban the film led him to find out innovative ways to reach out to the audience. That’s when the team decided to move forward with private screening events at parallel venues like Art House Spaces, Colleges/Institutions, Film Clubs & hosts of similar indie events.

UNFREEDOM juxtaposes two powerful and unflinching contemporary stories about religious fundamentalism and intolerance. Shifting between New York and New Delhi, one tale follows a Muslim terrorist who kidnaps a liberal Muslim scholar in order to silence him, while the other charts the travails of a young woman whose devout father tries to force her into an arranged marriage, which she resists because she is secretly in love with another woman. The four characters come face to face with gruesome acts of violence in battles of identity, fierce desire, religion, love, and family.
