He was a well known Qawwali singer from Pakistan who came to be known world wide for his phenomenal master ship at the art of singing. He was born on 13th October 1948 and passed away at the age of 48 in London in 1998 because of kidney failure. Before he bid adieu to the world , he had established himself as the musician who revived Sufi music and took it to great heights and popularity in the world. But he is credited not only with that, he was known to possess phenomenal talent at singing with rare vocal abilities. His voice and musical abilities made him an icon and subject of admiration for any aspiring singer belonging to any stream of music in the world.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in a reputed family of traditional singers of Qawwali in Lahore. Though Music was their family legacy , Nusrat’s father wanted him to become a doctor but Nusrat showed exceptional skill at singing and by the time he grew up, he was performing at various concerts in Pakistan and also made a mark in the Pakistani film industry. Gradually his fame transcended boundaries of Asia and he began to be invited for international musical concerts . He became immensely famous for his soul stirring Qawwali songs and Sufi music. He began a part of various international organisations that worked to promote interaction among musicians. His concerts brought him so much fame that his albums were sold rapidly.

Beginning with Japan , he travelled to and performed in over 40 countries in his life time. He performed in London and other centers of cultural exchange in Europe. He got the opportunity to blend his Sufi music with western music while working with the masters of western music such as Peter Gabriel and Eddi Vedder to name a few. Incidentally, his works in Bollywood are few. He sang for Aur Pyar Ho Gaya enacted by Aishwarya Rai and Bobby Deol . He also sang for Dhadkan film’s Dulhan Ka Sehra. His voice and personality gained huge popularity among the Hindi listeners. His album Afreen Afreen sold like hot cakes because of its soulful composition and use of rare sounds. Lisa Ray, the internationally acclaimed actress rendered her sensuous presence in the music video and it made the album even more scintillating. He was a part of A. R. Rahman’s superhit composition VandeMatram.

Though his association with Bollywood has been less , he has left his mark in the in the Indian musical industry. Qawwali and Sufi music could not become such an intrinsic part of Bollywood music. Composers like A. R. Rahman acknowledge the influence of this great master of Qawwali.

Nusrta Fateh Ali Khan met with an untimely death at the age of 48 due to kidney failure. He was taken to London for transplantation but succumbed to his illness after the unsuccessful operation. The world mourned at the demise of this phenomenal musician on 11 August 1997.
