Dobaaraa Movie Review: Anurag Kashyap is back with a bang and Taapsee Pannu owns the screen once again

Dobaaraa Movie Review

Ratings :⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Story:

The story begins when a lightning storm strikes one night. Then tragedy strikes when Anay, a teenage boy who happens to be a murder witness in Raja Ghosh’s (Saswata Chatterjee) house, is killed. Antra Awasthi (Taapsee Pannu) is now living in Anay’s house with her daughter Avanti and husband Vikas, 25 years later (Rahul Bhat). Antra’s track begins on a night with a similar wild storm, which connects her to Anay’s story via an old TV set and a video camera. Antara (Taapsee Pannu) intends to divorce her cheating husband in 2021 in order to live a happy life with her daughter Avanti. They unknowingly move into a house with a bad history — Anay, a schoolboy, was murdered after witnessing a murder in the neighborhood. Things become complicated when Antara begins interacting with the deceased boy Anay and decides to seek the truth in 1996.

Dobaaraa attempts to show how Antra manages to travel to the past and save Anay’s life, as well as the consequences of these events in her present life.

Review:

Not many films in India are based on time travel and sci-fi. Anurag is a risk taker who is never afraid to try something new. ‘Dobaaraa 2:12’, like his previous films, stands out. He approaches the genre with deftness, and his handling of the subject and plot opens up a new window for the audience. The film is a high-octane, stylized thriller.

Dobaaraa is not a typical time travel film, nor is it sci-fi or horror, but it incorporates elements from several genres, which works to its advantage. While the filmmaker is a great storyteller, given that this is his first remake, he has done a very effective and impressive job. A complex narrative can sometimes be more engaging than bland storytelling with no edge-of-your-seat moments. Nihit Bhave’s adapted screenplay does this justice and provides an immersive experience. Even the editing is done in such a way that events do not appear overly predictable, and editor Aarti Bajaj does a good job of crisply and cleverly cutting scenes to make them interesting to watch.

A good story can work wonders if it is supported by some convincing performances, which Dobaaraa does for the most part. Taapsee’s predicament and helplessness are beautifully depicted on screen. She effortlessly slips into Antra’s skin and completely owns the character. The scenes in which she is completely perplexed by the ambiguity of the situation are beautifully written and performed. It’s as close to reality as you can get.

Final verdict:

Even though it is a frame-by-frame adaptation of a Spanish film, Dobaaraa has its own take which makes it an enjoyable watch.
