Dolly Ki Doli movie review : Sonam’s Magic didn’t Impressed the audience

dolly-ki-doli movie review

Dolly Ki Doli is less spunkier and funkier you can only watch for Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma and Archana Puran Singh’s performances

Among the two movies, releasing this Friday, Dolly Ki Doli is one of them starring the style icon- Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma in the lead roles. The film is directed by a debutant director called Abhishek Dogra who has co-authored this film with Umashankar Singh. The movie is produced by the Dabangg producer- Arbaz Khan, while Music comes from the duo director Sajid-Wajid. The runtime of the film is less than two hours and to be precise, it tolls to 100 minutes. Ever since the trailer hit the social media, which happened to be the anniversary of Arbaz Khan and Malaika in December, the movie had its buzz in a considerate manner. Well, let’s have some insight about the movie as under:

First things first, let’s start with the plot or story line. Dolly Ki Doli revolves around the con woman who robs a number of men (though in the film, only three are shown) whom she marries with faking her wedding and finally escapes with everything on the very first night itself. She is seen meeting the most eligible bachelors and convince them to have a secret marriage and later flees with the jewellery and money of his grooms until her case is finally given to the cop Pulkit Samrat who nabs the culprit and con team and the one who is into the business of fooling grooms. The lady con is called Dolly, which is being played by Sonam Kapoor, while there are three men shows in the film who are her alleged grooms played by R Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma and Pulkit a groom cum cop.

Now, let’s talk about performances, starting with the script of the film. Unlike many B Town movies, Dolly Ki Doli is also seen doing well in the first half entertaining the audience but suffers from some fierce underwhelming second half, which seems more boring than the election battleground of Kiran and Kejriwal. If you look at the first half, you can have two perspective of it, first comes from the left brain and the second one comes via pseudo intellectual fashion, which can help you put intellectual fodder to even some of the worst kind of movies in Bollywood. The script doesn’t sounds interesting, as you have a plundering bride, which isn’t a new concept. A con woman sounds very much maverick especially when she is seen with her fake family to fool her potential grooms.

However, she is never seen consummating as her wedding doesn’t even comprise of a kiss from the man who has married this lady in a presence of so many people. The script gives enough opportunities to screw it intellectually. On doing that, you would realise that there is a woman who is married to a number of men but never is caught by anyone’s cameras. When we live in an age of smartphones and tablets, how comes it’s possible for anyone not capturing a single picture of this gorgeous girl in the bride role. That’s a big loophole in the film. You can find a very thin discrimination between the Sati Savitri and slutty Savitri, and we often stick to the former for our heroines. As long as they are not seen doing any kisses, they have the authority to do anything including fool innocent people, make their hearts like toy machine, and even take away all their wealth and assets making them bankrupt. The moment the bride is get kissed, the turns from sati to slutty, which doesn’t make Savitri a funny element.

Despite all odd, the movie in its first half seemed well paced, funny and humours. Well its the second half, which turns out rot without having any tangible content in it justifying an okay first half. Now, if you talk about performance of the main leads, despite the boring and annoying second half, you can notice some cocker performances by actors like Varun Sharma and Archana Puran Singh. Varun plays one of the grooms, who once again championed his character of a typical Delhi boy, perfectly showcasing the high on hormone and low logic role. Though he seemed similar to his previous character of Choocha in Fukrey, yet he outcast others with his incredible performances. Archana was seen doing a stellar job while playing his mother as all her dialogues, body language and acting performance remained the big source of humour in the film.

Rajkummar Rao who plays the role of an estranged lover seemed endearing in his performance that with his Haryanvi accent overshadowed Pulkit Samrat who tried posing Salman Khan to some extent. The style icon- Sonam Kapoor has her titular role in the film though seemed gorgeous in her stylish and cool wedding attires, but somewhere seen lagging behind the right punch, which this gorgeous con bride deserved in the film. More often she seemed okay but her dialogues were not less than rogue and screaming ones. The other elements like editing, music, screenplay, and locations remained above then average, not giving too many options to work wonder. Lastly, as its an Arbaz Khan movie, it’s inevitable to have an item number of Malaika Arora Khan, which doesn’t sound that power packed unlike the previous ones.

Dolly Ki Doli Review Last Word

In nutshell, if you talk about Abhishek Dogra’s debut movie, Dolly Ki Doli could have been far better what it is now, it could have been funkier and spunkier giving high entertainment value to the audience. It lacks behind the kind of performance, the main lead especially of Sonam deserves to the number of intellectual flaws and other loopholes the movie has in the second half. At the end of the day, it becomes a onetime watch film giving you too many loo breaks to try out having fun outside. Yet if you want reasons to catch the film, it can come from the performance of the desi boy Rajkummar Rao, the Punjabi (Funjabi) mother Archana Puran Singh and the Delhi guy with less intellect and more of hormones Varun Sharma.
