Dan Mace Shows The Power of Video Storytelling In New Hit TV Series ‘The BRU Show’

Dan Mace recently released a breathtaking TV show infused with creativity, out of the box thinking and a vulnerable artistry. In ‘The BRU Show’, Dan turns twelve impossibly big ideas into real-world projects that he has brought about by merging the word of YouTube with the production quality of commercial media. The episodes vary from Dan turning a box truck into a giant rolling camera, to answering the question “What is Happiness?” with a hundred people from across the globe. The BRU Show is the third season of Dan’s YouTube series “Not Normal”, where Dan travelled the world to help other creatives take action and complete their ideas.

Dan is blessed with a young and creative mind, having directed over 100 commercials, music videos, documentaries and short films spanning across four continents over the past 10 years of his career. He is the founder of JOE Films, a film production company based in Cape Town, South Africa, which he started in late 2020 off the back of his highly successful career as a YouTuber. Dan first created his YouTube channel in 2011, which then garnered a huge appreciation from the audience getting him over 783,000 subscribers and around 35 million views to date.

“I went to YouTube to learn more about myself and about non-fiction storytelling”, explains Dan, cherishing the creative freedom the platform offers as opposed to larger production agencies.

“With YouTube I started this thing called the ‘BRU Community’. It’s a term here in South Africa for a like minded friend. […] If I wanted to leave something behind, I would want to leave a community of people that think a certain way. I think creativity is the ability to create long-term conversations with people that stick with them forever, and that helps people to grow and to believe in themselves.”

Just a few weeks after they launch on discovery+, Dan releases each episode of ‘The BRU Show’ on his own YouTube channel, allowing anyone who does not yet have access to discovery+ to see his show. Something that is truly going against the mainstream and proves that, for Dan, the audience is his number one priority.

“I’ve decided to pour every ounce of creativity, combined with a hell of a lot of planning, and develop a twelve-part show. The final chapter, if you will.”, Dan describes in his video ‘The beginning of the end’.

Big-name YouTube stars like Logan Paul and Casey Neistat – who recently released a documentary on influencer David Dobrik – also appear throughout the episodes. They join Dan in his escapades and offer valuable wisdom about what it means to be ‘Creative’.

“In this show, I do everything I’ve always wanted to try. Everything I’ve never had the resources or time to attempt. Everything that’s now been made possible by partnering with discovery+. I really want to go out with a bang”, declares Dan.

Throughout his professional journey, Dan has won many accolades including 3 Young Director Awards at Cannes Lions, an African Crystal Film Grand Prix, Bronze Loerie Awards, Ciclope Africa Editing Craft awards, and the Creative Circle ad of the month award. His form of art is to capture the happiness factor and share it with the world around him.
