In October of last year, Shah Rukh Khan manoeuvred through yelling crowds, people shoving for a glimpse of him, and ravenous cameras clamouring for that crucial picture. When the actor saw his son Aryan who was imprisoned, he may have been at his weakest. He was captured on camera from every possible angle by those trying to approach him, others just observing his facial expression, and some even jeering. Shah Rukh moved without stumbling or picking up the pace. When he saw some elderly individuals, he extended a hand in greeting and gave them a respectful nod as well.
SRK has always maintained this persona in public, including a polite nod and a soft grin. Before consoling a distraught Saira Banu at Dilip Kumar’s funeral, he bowed and folded his hands in front of the watchmen as he entered. One of India’s biggest stars is distinguished from others by his unassuming behaviour. Fans found SRK to be much more approachable and genuine. Even without 300 crore rupee films, he could prove it. The string of failures prior to his break haven’t dulled his lustre; in fact, his tribulations have made people appreciate him even more.
After Aryan’s arrest, there was a significant outpouring of support on social media when SRK didn’t appear on his birthday and didn’t wave to supporters from the balcony as usual. It was comforting to witness the support he had after suffering through a traumatic month of anxiety. That’s when it finally hit me: SRK has always been surrounded by an ocean of love and support. Long ago, it has spread far beyond his films.
SRK has been a part of the Bollywood business for thirty years now, but his fame goes beyond the box office success of his movies. He hasn’t had the finest couple of years in terms of movies, since Jab Harry Met Sejal and Zero, among others, didn’t play up to expectations, but fans don’t dwell on it too much after a little nod of disappointment. Box office results don’t quite seem to fit with how to define SRK. Despite all of his failures, his personality comes through; you can’t stay mad at him for too long. You’ll be able to overlook his Jab Harry Met Sejal because he’d joke about it and make you laugh too.
Today, an air of majesty, true wonder, and love permeates the space around Shah Rukh Khan.
Only the part of him that he wants his audience to see is revealed to us, but someway, that’s enough.
