Creators of Made in Heaven Clarify: Radhika Apte’s Role Not Inspired by Yashica Dutt

The makers of the popular web series Made in Heaven have denied appropriating Dalit author Yashica Dutt’s story for an episode in the show. In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, August 16, the makers said they were “deeply disturbed” by the “misleading reports and comments” that have been circulating about the episode. They said that the episode was inspired by the works of several Dalit authors, including Dutt, Sujatha Gidla, Suraj Yengde, and Sumit Baudh.

However, the makers did not address Dutt’s specific allegation that Ghaywan had appropriated her story for a scene that forms a crucial part of the episode. In a previous post on Instagram, Ghaywan had specifically mentioned Dutt as an inspiration for the scene. Dutt has said that she is willing to give the makers of Made in Heaven the benefit of the doubt, but she wants them to be transparent about their sources and to give her formal credit for her contribution.

The controversy have raised questions about the representation of Dalits in the Indian media. In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of Dalit writers and activists accusing filmmakers and journalists of appropriating their stories without giving them credit. The issue of Dalit representation is a complex one, and there is no easy answer. However, it is important to have a public discussion about this issue so that we can create a more inclusive and equitable media landscape.
