Catch Manto – Nawazuddin Siddiqui looks intriguing in the first look of Nandita Das’ directorial
The new poster of Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Manto is out. The film is directed by Nandita Das, the first look of the film was unveiled at Cannes Film Festival 2017.Nandita also posted the picture on her Facebook page. She captioned it saying, ““If you cannot bear these stories, it is because we live in unbearable times” – Saadat Hasan Manto WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? YOUR FREEDOM or FREEDOM OF SPEECH. #Cannes2017 #film”
Indeed Intriguing! Nandita also shared behind-the-scene stills on her Facebook page and the movie indeed looks interesting! In the first look, Nawaz is seen giving an intense look, while a stain of blood is crossed over his face. It also has Saadat Hasan Manto’s writings in Urdu. Interesting much? Manto also stars Rasika Dugal playing the role of Manto’s wife named Safiya. .
Talking about the film, Nandini told a Hollywood magazine, “I first read Manto’s stories when I was in college and was fascinated by how truthful and edgy the stories were, and how contemporary they wereI wanted to make a film on his life and his work. He believed having the courage to speak the truth was important. In his writing, he addressed free speech and women’s issues.
He was also a feminist. Everything he says is extremely contemporary and addresses issues of today.” Whereas Nawazuddin said, “I hope this inspires people to have the courage to speak the truth.” Manto is set against the backdrop of 1940s India and Saadat Hasan Manto is known as one of the greatest writers of short stories in South Asian history.
