Suraj Venjaramoodu’s acting career in Malayalam films is nothing less than a fairy tale. Entering stage shows and then TV serials and later Films and bagging the national award that is the journey of this talented comedian cum character actor. Even as he began his career as a small time comedian, he was someone who would not go unnoticed in the smallest roles. Suraj is now an accomplished actor in Malayalam with over 100 films and many memorable roles to his credit. He is one of those rare actors in the country who makes us laugh as well as cry.

Suraj’s beginning in films: Jagapoga was a popular show on Kairali TV which was a spoof of many Malayalam characters. It was later made in to a film of the same name. Marking this as his debut, Suraj stepped into comic roles in many movies like Pokiri Raja, Happy husbands, Cheriya Kallanum Valiya Policum, Sandwich, Teja Bhai and Family to name a few.
Later as Malayalam cinema got into the experimental mode, villains and comedian all switched roles and got into each other’s shoes. Suraj began to be cast in serious roles and there also he struck gold. Suraj’s acting prowess was loud, clear and impactful in the Pullipulikalum Attinkuttiyum, Ezhu sundara Rathrigal, Naadodimannan, Law Point, Vellivellichatil, Birds with Large Wings, Kammattipaadam, Anyarkku Praveshmilla, Action Hero Biju, Oru Muthasssi Gadha and many more.
National Award in Perariyathavar( The Unknown) : Suraj plays a roadside sweeper. The story tackles the relationship between him and his eleven year old son. The film is a spotlight on the life of many sweepers and scavengers in our society who for nameless and undistinguished for us. Suraj left everyone speechless with his real life exemplary performance. The role was refused by many veterans in Malayalam industry before falling in the kitty of Suraj.
Suraj won the national award for best actor for the role.
Suraj’s recent films: Suraj’s role of a common man who is cheated by his wife in Action Hero Biju was impactful. Though a small role, Suraj’s acting spoke volumes.
In the recently released Oru Muthassi Gadha, Suraj plays the male lead. He makes a sweet pairing with Lena. Suraj’s portrayal of a common man with his household commitments and his intricate relationship with his aging mother is exceptionally close to life.
Suraj’s Personal Life: Born in a common household, Suraj wanted to become an army officer as his father since childhood. After he broke his arm in an unfortunate accident, Suraj had to quit his dream of joining the army. He performed in many stage shows as a mimicry artist which paved the way for his career in films where success was waiting for him.
Suraj is married to Supriya in Thiruvantahpuram .The couple have three children Kashinath , Vasudev, Hridya. His son, Kashinath has acted in two Malayalam films Annan Thambi and Teja Bhai and Family.
