Confirmed! Gangubai Kathiawadi to start streaming on Netflix after 8 weeks of its release
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi was the first big budget film released on the theatre after the third wave of covid. While it was one of the most anticipated films, all eyes were on its Box Office collection. As per the reports the film has already crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark.
According to recent reports, the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi decided to premiere the film on Netflix after 8 weeks, rather than the four week rule that is currently in effect in the pandemic, due to the film’s successful theatrical run.
Talking about the same, one of the film’s producers and distributors, Jayantilal Gada, confirmed that the film would indeed be released on Netflix after eight weeks.
Answering if the decision to push this window from 4 weeks to 8 weeks was taken post it’s release in cinemas, he said, “That’s not true. The film was always meant to premiere on OTT after 8 weeks of theatrical release.”
Even before the pandemic, it was standard procedure for a film to be released on a digital platform after 8 weeks in theatres. A few films, such as Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017) and 1921 (2018), attempted to enter the OTT market before the 8-week mark. Multiplex chains across the country then refused to show these films in their theatres. The filmmakers agreed to follow the eight-week rule on the day of release, and the screenings of these films began in the afternoon on the first day.
However, until normalcy returns in the post-pandemic era, national multiplexes have agreed to let films arrive on streaming giants within four weeks. Some producers, on the other hand, have requested that their film be allowed to premiere on OTT within two weeks in order to increase revenue.
