This is how lyricist lyricist Gulzar came up with the hookline ‘Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya’

‘There was a period when ‘Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya’ was the national party anthem. No party was complete without this song being played. In fact, if it is played at any party today, it may easily overshadow all of the other party songs and dance numbers. That is the power of this song.

Along with Vishal Bhardwaj’s superb music, and Bipasha Basu’s iconic dance moves, the quirky lyrics by Gulzar are a standout feature of this particular party anthem.

Gulzar recently accompanied Mani Ratnam and music composer A.R. Rahman to a recent conversation with cinema critic Anupama Chopra on Film Companion, to promote their upcoming film Ponniyin Selvan 2.

During the interaction, Gulzar spilled the beans about how he came up with the hookline ‘Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya’. Revealing about the idea behind the hookline, Gulzaar said, “Bagaire us character ko jane jispe cigarette ka dhua gaya hai aur jo jhagada hua hai, usko jaane bagaire, ye ‘Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya’, ye nahi kaha ja sakta, (We cannot sing Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya’ without knowing and completely comprehending that character on whom the smoke of the cigarette is being spoofed, and that argument that had occurred earlier).

He further adds, “It can’t come from outside, it has to come out from the script itself because the whole thing starts from there. Ja padosi ke chuleh se aag lehi le’ you know what is happening on the other side in the same building. So there are references to the script in the song and that is why Beedi Jalaile’ happens”

Lyricist Gulzar, music composer A.R. Rahman, and filmmaker Mani Ratnam collaborated on several cult films, including Roza (1992), Bombay (1995), Dil Se (1999), and Guru (2007), and gave many iconic Hindi songs.
