Adapted from Pavan Kirpalani’s original concept, the script, meticulously reworked by director Kussh S. Sinha, Neel Mohanty, and Ankur Takrani, offers a refreshing deviation from conventional horror. It cleverly integrates a social dimension without resorting to melodrama or excessive scares. The film masterfully builds atmosphere and tension through its sharp writing, allowing the visuals to subtly enhance the suspense.
Adopting a more Western storytelling style, Nikita Roy maintains a slick and concise narration, avoiding unnecessary detours for mere entertainment. This efficiency extends to its sharp and swift denouement, which, while impressive, might feel too abrupt and clinically delivered for audiences accustomed to more leisurely Hindi film climaxes. The film expertly blends social relevance, criminal intent, and the paranormal, creating a riveting drama. However, a more expanded and thoroughly explained climax could have amplified its overall impact.
Star Performance: Sonakshi Sinha and Paresh Rawal Shine
Sonakshi Sinha delivers a fantastic performance as Nikita. Her portrayal of steely determination and a seemingly stubborn nature is commendably brought out. Sinha’s continuous growth as an actress is evident here, embodying a resolute rationalist and a grieving, dedicated sister with conviction.
Paresh Rawal is effortlessly in sync as Amardev. His deadly smile, ominous body language, and mastery as a psychological manipulator make him a truly repugnant yet charismatic figure. Rawal, much like the legendary actors who lend a unique touch to every role, makes Amardev dexterously hypnotic.
Suhail Nayyar provides competent support as Jolly, while Arjun Rampal, despite his brief appearance as Sanal, leaves a lasting impact. Kalliroi Tziafeta is a remarkable talent, delivering a “Wow!” performance in her short role as Freya.
Direction, Music, and Overall Verdict
Kussh S. Sinha makes a confident directorial debut. He excels in the film’s mounting, production values, and narrative grammar, showcasing a promising talent in the industry. His ability to stick to matter-of-fact emotions rather than melodrama, while offering a topical debate on rationality versus irrationality through relevant social commentary, is particularly impressive. While the music is not a highlight, the film’s cohesive execution makes up for it.
Nikita Roy effortlessly rises above other recent heroine-centric thrillers set in the UK. As a standalone thriller, it truly stands out for its sharp script, compelling performances, and confident direction. It’s a gripping watch that blends social commentary with suspense.
