Netflix Increases Offer from ₹60 Cr. to ₹125 Cr. for Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par to Halt YouTube Release Strategy

In what could be one of the year’s most significant streaming deals, Bollywood Hungama has exclusively learned that Netflix has more than doubled its initial offer to acquire the digital rights for Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par (STP), now pitching an astonishing ₹125 crores to secure this highly anticipated project.
Initially, the streaming giant had proposed an offer in the range of ₹50 – 60 crores, a figure typical for most top-tier Bollywood films. However, the substantial increase comes as a response to Aamir Khan’s ongoing push for an alternative digital distribution model—specifically, YouTube Pay-Per-View.

New Digital Battleground

Aamir Khan is known for his independent mindset and unconventional marketing strategies. He has openly expressed dissatisfaction with traditional subscription-based streaming platforms. Over the past year, the superstar has advocated for making his films available on YouTube through a pay-per-view model, arguing that this approach offers greater accessibility for Indian audiences, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities where paid streaming subscriptions are less prevalent.Khan argues that this model allows audiences to watch new films for a nominal one-time fee, avoiding the costly monthly subscriptions. He stated earlier this year at a closed-door industry conclave that such a release strategy would enable deep penetration, making films accessible to anyone with a smartphone.

Netflix Raises the Stakes

This bold stance appears to have unsettled traditional streaming giants, with Netflix now leading the effort to keep Sitaare Zameen Par off YouTube. “The film’s transition to a YouTube Pay-Per-View model could disrupt the entire ecosystem,” says a senior industry insider close to the negotiations. “If Aamir succeeds, it could empower more filmmakers to reach audiences directly through open platforms, forcing streaming services like Netflix and Amazon to compete with a format that is cheaper, more accessible, and less exclusive.”The insider adds, “For Netflix, acquiring Sitaare Zameen Par is not merely about the film’s potential—it’s about safeguarding their market position. Aamir’s wide audience reach and the project’s credibility mark a pivotal moment for OTT strategy in India.”

The Outcome of This Tug-of-War

While it remains uncertain whether Aamir will accept Netflix’s substantial offer or adhere to his disruptive release strategy, the stakes are undeniably high. Should Khan opt for the YouTube Pay-Per-View route, it could redefine the economics and audience reach of mainstream Bollywood cinema, potentially reshaping the digital landscape of film distribution in India. For now, all eyes are on Sitaare Zameen Par—not only for its cinematic promise but also for the profound shift it could herald in the entertainment industry at large.
