Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s ₹100 Crore Defamation Suit Against Brother and Estranged Wife Dismissed After Actor Skips Hearings

The Bombay High Court has dismissed Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s ₹100 crore defamation lawsuit filed against his brother Shamasuddin Siddiqui and estranged wife Anjana Pandey, citing Nawazuddin and his legal team’s repeated absence from court hearings.
Nawazuddin had accused his younger brother—who also served as his manager since 2008—of betrayal and financial misconduct. He claimed to have entrusted Shamasuddin with control over his bank accounts and finances to focus on his acting career. However, Nawazuddin alleged that his brother purchased multiple properties, including Mumbai flats, land, a farmhouse, a Dubai property, and luxury vehicles, under his own name, leading Nawazuddin to believe they were jointly owned.
At the same time, Nawazuddin accused Shamasuddin of influencing his ex-wife to file false cases against him after he removed Shamasuddin as his manager in 2020. He claimed both had circulated hurtful videos and defamatory posts on social media that caused public humiliation, mental anguish, delays in film projects, and damage to his reputation.
Why Was the Case Dismissed?
The High Court, headed by Justice Jitendra Jain, dismissed the suit due to “non-prosecution”—as Nawazuddin and his counsel failed to appear for multiple hearings and did not actively pursue the case, the court ruled that the matter could not proceed in their absence.
What Were Nawazuddin’s Demands?
Nawazuddin sought ₹100 crore in damages for the emotional and reputational harm suffered, a permanent injunction preventing his brother and ex-wife from posting defamatory content, removal of all negative material online, a public apology, and an order barring them from selling assets until any awarded damages could be recovered.
On the Professional Front
Currently, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is busy promoting his upcoming film Thamma, the latest installment in the Maddock Horror-Comedy Universe, slated for release on October 21.
