Mahesh Manjrekar’s Diwali Release Punha Shivajiraje Bhosale Sparks IP Dispute; Everest Entertainment Threatens Legal Action

This Diwali, the box office battle won’t just be between Thama and Kartik Aaryan-Sreeleela’s untitled film. In Maharashtra and several other regions, Punha Shivajiraje Bhosale is also entering the fray. As a spiritual sequel to the beloved 2009 film Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy, the new film has generated significant excitement, especially after its powerful teaser was released recently. However, the film has become embroiled in controversy following a public notice issued by Everest Entertainment, the producer of the original Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy.
The notice, published in Atul Mohan’s Complete Cinema magazine (June 28 – July 5, 2025 issue), was issued by Everest Entertainment LLP through their legal representatives, Bar & Brief Attorneys. It stated that Everest Entertainment is the co-producer and sole legal owner of all intellectual property rights related to Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy. These rights, covering the film’s script, music, negatives, and other elements, are valid worldwide for 60 years. The notice asserted Everest’s exclusive ownership and control over the film’s intellectual property.
Also, Everest Entertainment declared that it holds the exclusive rights to produce any sequels or prequels of Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy. The notice explicitly warned that no third party—including Mahesh Manjrekar, Rahul Sughand, Rahul Puranik, or anyone else—has the authority to negotiate deals or agreements related to these rights. Any unauthorized attempts would be considered legal violations of Everest’s ownership.
The notice also invited anyone believing they hold a claim—whether through assignment, license, sale, mortgage, litigation, or otherwise—to submit written claims with documentary evidence within 14 days of the notice’s publication. Failure to do so would result in their claims being waived, and Everest would not be liable for any such claims.
About the Films
Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy featured Sachin Khedekar as Dinkar, a modern-day Maharashtrian struggling with identity and pride in Mumbai. When his frustration leads him to regret his heritage, the spirit of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, played by Mahesh Manjrekar, awakens to confront and guide him. This encounter drives the film’s narrative—setting a powerful tone that Punha Shivajiraje Bhosale aims to continue.
