Following the success of Gadar 2, which shattered multiple box office records, Sunny Deol has made his comeback to the big screen with his latest film Jaat. Directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the same team behind the Pushpa franchise, Jaat opened with an impressive Rs 9.5 crore on its release day.
Box Office Performance
Despite a strong start, Jaat experienced a decline in both collections and the number of screenings across India. According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 7 crore on its second day, bringing its total earnings to Rs 16.5 crore in India. On its release day, Jaat had approximately 5585 shows nationwide. However, this number dropped to 5141 shows on the second day, with over 400 shows being removed, including 100 in Mumbai and 30 in Delhi-NCR. This reduction significantly impacted the film’s second-day earnings. While the overall Hindi occupancy was 14.28% on Thursday, it fell to 11.19% on Friday.
Cast and Competition
In addition to Sunny Deol, Jaat features Randeep Hooda as the primary antagonist and includes notable South Indian stars such as Ramya Krishnan and Jagapathi Babu. With Jaat, Sunny appears to be making an effort to penetrate the South Indian market, similar to Shah Rukh Khan’s strategy with Jawan in 2023. However, the number of shows in key markets like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai were also reduced on the second day.The trend of Bollywood stars attempting to adopt South Indian aesthetics has seen mixed results, with recent efforts like Salman Khan’s Sikandar barely crossing the Rs 100 crore mark, and Varun Dhawan’s Baby John failing to perform well.
Future Projects
While Gadar 2 earned Rs 41 crore on its opening day, it had been nearly two decades since Sunny Deol had a solo hit. Following Jaat, he is set to star in Lahore 1947 and a sequel to his iconic film Border. Jaat also features actors Saiyami Kher, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Zarina Wahab, among others, adding to an impressive cast lineup.
