Acclaimed author Debleena Majumdar’s cinematic and soul-stirring biography tells the remarkable true story of Sabu Dastagir, the Indian boy and son of a mahout from Mysore, who rose from the elephant stables to become India’s first international movie star and a Hollywood icon. From colonial India to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Sabu’s life is a forgotten epic of fame, war, identity, and legacy.
Sabu made his debut in Elephant Boy, based on Rudyard Kipling’s story “Toomai of the Elephants” from The Jungle Book (1894). The film was directed by documentary filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty, who shot much of the Indian footage, and completed under the supervising direction of Zoltan Korda, who won the Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival. The production took place at London Films’ Denham studios and on location in Mysore.Following this breakthrough, Sabu starred in Hollywood classics such as The Thief of BagdadJungle Book (1942), and Black Narcissus. A box office sensation, decorated World War II air gunner, and cultural bridge between East and West, Sabu’s story is both inspiring and poignant.
