A controversy is brewing around the upcoming film O’Romeo after Sanober Shaikh, daughter of Hussain Ustara, issued a legal notice to the film’s producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bhardwaj. In the notice, Sanober objects to what she claims is an unfavorable portrayal of her father in the movie and has demanded Rs. 2 crores in compensation, with a payment deadline of seven days. Additionally, she has requested that the film’s release be halted or canceled until her concerns are satisfactorily addressed.
A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The notice was sent last week to Sajid Nadiadwala of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Vishal Bhardwaj. It alleges that O’Romeo depicts Hussain Ustara in a negative light, damaging the family’s reputation. Sanober has therefore sought Rs. 2 crores as compensation and urged the makers to stop the film’s release pending resolution of her objections.”
Though this controversy has stirred discussion, the makers have not officially confirmed that O’Romeo is based on real-life individuals. However, speculation has long circulated that the film draws inspiration from stories involving Hussain Ustara and Sapna Didi. The recently released teaser, dated January 10, does mention that the film is inspired by real events. How the makers will respond remains to be seen—whether through clarifications, legal action, or by remaining silent until the film’s February 13 release.
O’Romeo features an ensemble cast including Shahid Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, Avinash Tiwary, Farida Jalal, Vikrant Massey, Nana Patekar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani, Aruna Irani, Hussain Dalal, Resh Lamba, and Rahul Deshpande. This marks the fourth collaboration between Shahid Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj, following Kaminey (2009), Haider (2014), and Rangoon (2017).
